UKCA DELAY

The Government has today announced that UKCA marking will NOT be mandatory for any products until 1st January 2023, providing a 12 month delay on the previously announced date. This applies to those that need third party certification AND to self-certified products. This means that manufacturers will have 16 months to prepare, although you can apply UKCA marking on a voluntary basis before the mandatory date. This follows intensive lobbying from BEAMA to recognise that for many products requiring third party conformity assessment, including Construction Products, there will not be sufficient availability or capacity for UK Approved Body testing by the end of 2021.
It will be frustrating for manufacturers who have already applied enormous effort and resource to accelerate their preparations for full UKCA marking by the end of the year but we have also lobbied to ensure this announcement came as early as was politically possible, rather than just before the expiry of the previous deadline. It will be welcome that there is a chance for the new regime to fully enter into force in a better organised manner with, we hope, more substantial compliance and customer understanding across the GB market. There is no change to the continuing use of CE marking for Northern Ireland products.
