Smart Buildings Group

BEAMA, the trade association representing energy infrastructure and systems, has a strong focus on emerging technologies within the smart sector. As technology rapidly advances, both the government and our manufacturers are eager to leverage these innovations to help meet decarbonization targets. This Smart Building Group sector offers numerous opportunities to introduce innovative technologies that contribute to creating smarter, more efficient homes.

The Smart Building Group plays a crucial role in supporting manufacturers in the smart home sector by advocating for standards, driving innovation, and fostering collaboration. Through their efforts, the SBG group ensures that manufacturers are well-positioned to meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected and tech-driven world.

We represent our members on the SSES Smart Secure Energy Systems, Power Responsive, NESO Strategic Energy Planning Industry Working Group.

We also represent our members in the PAS1878 workgroups, Open ADR alliance and several other national and international standards.

Given the nature of the Smart Building Group, we also collaborate with other trade associations and affiliate with a number of other organisations to seek and collaborate views for policies and advocacy.

Some current key areas of focus are;

  • Policy and advocacy – the smart space is a hot subject area for this year and BEAMA are at the forefront with DESNZ in collaborating and
  • BEAMA’s Industrial strategy – positioning our manufacturers for growth in the UK
  • Smart Data and Consumer Energy Data with a focus on consumption and flexibility with the grid.
  • Smart Heat technology – working alongside our Heating sectors to support the government and industry in understanding opportunities for growth in this area.
  • Flexibility - working with DESNZ, Ofgem and NESO to understanding the overall energy systems structure.
  • International and national product standards – working with BSI and other associations to keep up to date and represent BEAMA’s view
  • Protocols- looking at PAS1878 and Open ADR and Matter

Energy Systems and Appliances (ESAs)

One of the Key areas of major development and opportunities for SBG members are the endless opportunities with ESAs.

BEAMA manufacturers play a key role in advancing technologies that contribute to a smarter, more sustainable energy future in the UK. Our manufacturers are working on creating energy-efficient appliances, smart systems, and energy management solutions that can help consumers reduce energy consumption and lower their carbon footprints.

As emerging technologies in the energy sector evolve, it’s important that current policies and innovations are aligned to ensure their success.

Consumer Energy Data and Data Infrastructure

BEAMA’s focus on Consumer Energy Data over the last few years has seen much evolution. The group continues to advocate for policies to promote the integration of smart meters, energy management systems, and demand response solutions, while ensuring data privacy and security.

Consumer energy data plays a vital role in helping the UK meet its Clean Power 2030 objectives and reduce carbon emissions. By providing insights into energy usage, it allows consumers to make more informed decisions, optimize their energy consumption, and reduce waste, which directly supports decarbonization efforts.

Energy data also helps integrate renewable energy more effectively, manage demand, and encourage the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.

This group will also collaborate closely with the ESA and CEM subgroups to establish clear standards for interoperability between devices and systems, enabling seamless communication within smart building ecosystems.

The opportunities for consumer data are extensive, and manufacturers can harness this potential to empower consumers with actionable insights from their energy data. Encouraging the development of technologies that promote smarter, more efficient energy use will be crucial for achieving the UK's decarbonization goals.

Infrastructure Controls and Assisted Living

Infrastructure Controls

Infrastructure controls are crucial for optimising energy efficiency, ensuring grid flexibility, enhancing safety and interoperability, supporting smart technologies, and meeting regulatory standards—key drivers of decarbonisation and innovation in sustainable energy systems.

At BEAMA, we aim to explore these options and opportunities further to support our members in advancing these goals.

Assisted Living

The availability of smart technology can significantly enhance assisted living by focusing on safety, convenience, and well-being. Now more than ever, there is a need to help older adults maintain independence, stay connected with loved ones, and receive timely support, all while improving their quality of life in assisted living environments.

Smart technologies offer valuable solutions that address the unique needs of the aging community, promoting safety, independence, and overall well-being, enabling individuals to live more comfortably and securely.

Areas of focus are;

Smart home automation allows individuals to control their environment with ease, adjusting lighting, temperature, and appliances without physical effort.

Smart security systems enhance safety by providing real-time monitoring and alerts, ensuring that caregivers are notified of any irregular activity.

Fall detection and health monitoring systems offer peace of mind by automatically detecting emergencies and tracking vital signs, which can alert caregivers or emergency services when needed.
