CASE STUDY: Zero Carbon Development
The Brief: WMS was briefed to design, supply and install underfloor heating systems for a developer’s first ever zero carbon scheme of high specification three, four and five bedroom homes. Each home has been expertly designed to help residents to reduce their carbon footprint, exceeding the Government’s Future Homes Standard and the update to the Part L Building Regulations. Each of the 32 efficient and future proofed new homes will create as much prime energy as they need at zero cost to the homeowner, thanks to their use of highly efficient air source heat pumps, combined with underfloor heating, along with high-performance solar panels, to provide renewable energy.
The Challenge: Compared to traditional convection heating systems, air source heat pumps are more thoroughly designed and work with a tighter temperature range than the industry is used to, in order to ensure that each home is working at a greater efficiency to help reduce the homeowner bills. WMS was selected to work closely with the developer and air source heat pump manufacturer to ensure the underfloor heating system design pairs seamlessly with the heat source, as it is critically important to ensure efficiency of the overall system. WMS was also briefed to tailor the controls specifically for the system and specific zoning requirements. This meant taking into consideration three to four thermostats downstairs for the underfloor heating, one for the upstairs radiators and one for the hot water, which is not something that many standard controls can tackle.
The WMS Solution: Bringing 18 years of experience in designing, suppling and installing low temperature heating systems to the project, WMS produced a full CAD design and calculation of heat losses from the buildings specific SAP figures, liaising closely with the air source heat pump manufacturer throughout, to ensure a fully efficient system.
