Key points from Chancellor's Spring Statement

13 March 2019

  • A Future Homes Standard to be launched in 2025 to mandate low carbon heating systems (fossil fuels not allowed) and improved energy efficiency in new buildings
    • It was noted by commentators that the Government scrapped the 0 Carbon Homes target in 2015 and that the vast majority of housing stock in the coming years will not be covered by this new policy (which seems partially driven by the need to avoid a higher cost for the renovation strategy that is required by the EPBD)
    • There will be a consultation on this later this year
    • BEAMA will engage members before then as part of our review and planning around the Government’s decarbonisation targets
  • There will be a publication ‘in the coming months’ on the Future of Mobility (urban transport)
  • There will be a consultation in 2019 on decarbonising the gas grid by increasing the proportion of ‘green gas’ in the grid
  • Consultation issued on helping businesses with energy efficiency
  • Confirmation that there will be a Spending Review starting in Summer and concluding in Autumn in time for the budget – this will set Departmental budgets for the next three years
