Underfloor heating is often seen as a premium system, but it is highly efficient to run and more flexible than many homeowners expect.

 

Is UFH expensive to install? 

The cost of a UFH system varies depending on the property and system type. In general, screed systems are the most cost-effective option for new builds, while retrofit systems tend to cost more due to additional components and installation requirements. 

Is UFH expensive to run? 

No. Warm water UFH is typically around 25% more efficient than traditional radiators when used with a modern condensing boiler and can be up to 40% cheaper to run when paired with a heat pump. 

This is because UFH operates at lower flow temperatures, improving overall system efficiency. 

It is also significantly more cost-effective than electric UFH systems, which use electricity at a higher running cost than gas or oil. 

What floor coverings can I use with UFH? 

UFH is compatible with most floor finishes, including carpet, wood and tile. While some materials conduct heat more effectively than others, a correctly designed system will still achieve the required room temperature across all finishes. 

How is UFH controlled? 

UFH can be controlled using simple thermostats or smart systems operated via smartphone or tablet. Retrofit and floating floor systems typically respond more quickly, while screeded systems take longer to heat but deliver highly efficient steady-state performance. 

For screeded systems, setback temperatures are often recommended to maximise efficiency. 

How long does installation take? 

Installation time depends on the size and complexity of the project. Your supplier or installer will be able to provide clear guidance on typical timescales.
