BEAMA has welcomed the recent report ‘Pathways for the GB Electricity Sector to 2030’ published by Energy UK.

24 Feb 2016

The report outlines the requirements for a ‘whole systems approach’ to our smart energy future.  Speaking after the launch BEAMA’s CEO Dr Howard Porter acknowledged the synergies between Energy UK’s conclusions and the future challenges facing industry and policy makers as identified by BEAMA members; “The Pathways report resonates strongly with our own proposals to DECC made through the ongoing Bonfield Review in which we have ‘closed the loop’ between supply, local generation, storage, time of use tariffing and optimised energy management, all linked to energy efficiency of domestic appliances including heating.  Our secure energy future is dependent on customers understanding their energy demand and managing so they receive tangible fiscal benefits for generation, export and demand reduction.”

BEAMA is currently working with industry partners to promote a higher profile for energy efficiency advice to be delivered alongside the smart meter roll-out and complemented by in home displays and stronger consumer engagement.  The end game for support infrastructure should be a target for 2020 by which time homes have consumer access devices (CADs) with high efficiency appliances, storage capability and demand side response (DSR) potential. Porter concluded “The future is actually just around the corner but we agree with Energy UK that success is dependent on cross industry and Government co-ordination to effect change”.
