The UK’s ambition to deliver a smart, flexible energy system is a welcome and necessary step for the country to take in moving towards a Net Zero energy system. Energy Smart Appliance (ESA) regulations will play a critical role in making this a reality. Manufacturers are ready to support this transition, but the current proposals risk undermining that progress if key issues are not addressed.

 

Across the sector, there is strong backing for the intent of the Smart Secure Electricity Systems (SSES) Programme. However, uncertainty around timelines, technical requirements, and implementation is creating real challenges for manufacturers trying to invest, innovate, and scale. 

Clarity is now the critical missing piece. Without timely guidance and fully defined standards, particularly around Ecodesign alignment, cyber security requirements, and technical specifications such as MIR, businesses cannot make informed decisions on product development cycles that span several years.

There is also a risk of unintended market distortion. Uneven regulatory treatment, misaligned timelines, and gaps in how different market actors are accounted for could weaken competition and reduce the incentive to invest in UK-based innovation. 

Getting this right means taking a pragmatic approach. A phased or transitional implementation period would give manufacturers the time needed to adapt, while ensuring regulations are both effective and enforceable. At the same time, greater alignment across technologies and clearer guidance would provide the confidence industry needs to move at pace. 

The prize is significant: a smarter, more flexible energy system that benefits consumers, strengthens energy security, and accelerates the transition to Net Zero. But to unlock this, regulation must be clear, consistent, and deliverable.
