The Future Homes Standard represents a significant step forward in the UK’s journey toward decarbonising the built environment. The direction and expectations are clear: new homes should be low carbon, highly efficient, and capable of supporting an increasingly electrified energy system. But are we ready to deliver this at scale?  

Across the industry, we are asking more of new homes than ever before. Electrified heat, EV charging, battery storage, smart metering and system flexibility are increasingly becoming baseline expectations. In theory, these technologies can help form highly efficient, responsive homes that work seamlessly for consumers.

In practice, delivery is more complex.  

One of the key challenges lies in fragmentation. Many of these technologies are still being developed, specified and installed in isolation. While policy frameworks and standards are evolving rapidly, the coordination between product development, system integration and on-the-ground installation is not always keeping pace.

This is where the gap emerges: not in ambition, but in alignment.  

Bridging this gap is essential. It’s not enough to define what future homes should look like; we must ensure the systems that underpin them are interoperable, reliable and deliverable in real-world conditions.  

The work of BEAMA’s Smart Buildings Group is focused precisely on this challenge. By bringing together expertise across Smart Secure Electricity Systems (SSES), interoperability and smart technologies, the aim is to ensure that what is being designed at a system level can be implemented effectively in homes across the UK. 

Because ultimately, success will not be measured by policy alone, but by outcomes:  

• Do these homes work for the people living in them?  

• Do systems integrate as intended?  

• And can we deliver this consistently, at scale?  

As the industry moves forward, collaboration will be key. Policy, guidance, standards and education all have a role to play in ensuring that the Future Homes Standard is not just achievable but deliverable.  

The question is no longer what we need to do. It’s whether we are aligned enough to make it happen.
