BEAMA Guide: Verification of temperature rise and short-circuit withstand (other than by test)

11 Jun 2018

Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies must meet strict safety and performance requirements under the BS EN 61439 series. One important aspect of this is design verification: ensuring that assemblies can safely operate within defined limits for temperature rise and short-circuit withstand strength.

To support industry understanding and best practice, BEAMA has published guidance on how these verification requirements can be demonstrated through methods other than physical testing.

What the guide covers

This publication provides practical guidance on the design verification of low-voltage assemblies, specifically focusing on:

  • Temperature-rise verification, using assessment and comparison methods.
  • Short-circuit withstand strength, verified through comparative approaches.

The guidance applies to assemblies with a rated voltage of up to 1000V AC or 1500V DC, and frequencies up to 60Hz.

It also reinforces that all other verification requirements within the BS EN 61439 standard must still be completed to ensure full compliance and safe operation.

Why this matters

Design verification is a critical part of ensuring the safety, reliability and performance of low-voltage assemblies. By providing structured approaches beyond testing, this guide supports manufacturers and engineers in demonstrating compliance while maintaining consistency with international standards.
