Switchgear and transformers are essential components of electricity networks. Without them, it would not be possible to expand electrical capacity or support the transition away from fossil fuels in buildings and transport.
Switchgear
Switchgear is used to connect, disconnect, and reconfigure parts of the electricity network. In many cases, it must operate safely under a full electrical load and remain reliable over decades of service.
To manage electrical arcing during switching operations, different technologies are used, including air, oil, vacuum, and SF₆ (sulphur hexafluoride).
Modern switchgear is evolving to meet three key priorities:

Smaller physical footprints, particularly for urban installations
SF₆ has been widely used because it enables compact, high-performance designs. However, it is also a potent greenhouse gas. As a result, BEAMA members are actively developing alternatives to SF₆-based switchgear that deliver similar performance with lower environmental impact.
Transformers
Transformers are critical for moving electricity efficiently across the network. Early electrical systems demonstrated that transmitting power at very high voltages significantly reduces energy losses and allows for smaller, more efficient cables.
In the UK, transmission voltages can reach up to 440kV. Electricity generated at lower voltages is stepped up for transmission and then stepped down again for safe distribution to homes and businesses. Transformers perform this essential function.
Key requirements for transformers are efficiency, reliability, and long service life, all of which modern designs achieve at a high standard.
Most new transformers now meet EcoDesign Tier 1 efficiency requirements, with even stricter Tier 2 standards introduced from 2021. BEAMA members supply a full range of high-quality transformers, from small distribution units to large power transformers used in transmission networks.
