State of Nation: Driving UK Energy Smart Appliance Manufacturing for Clean Power
25 November 2025
This report provides a snapshot of how ready UK manufacturers of energy smart appliances are to deliver the products and systems needed for Clean Power 2030 and the UK’s wider Electrification ambitions. It follows our Smart Energy Explainer from June called 'Giving Consumers Access to Clean Power'.
The State of the Nation paper sets out how prepared UK manufacturers are to deliver the Energy Smart Appliances and connected technologies needed for a flexible, clean power system. Drawing on detailed engagement across BEAMA’s smart metering, smart buildings and EV groups, it provides an honest view of where the sector stands and how policy development is shaping confidence to invest.
Manufacturers are clear about the direction of travel but are facing real challenges. Shifting timelines, fragmented regulation and unaligned standards are slowing product development and creating uncertainty around where to prioritise resource. Market signals including electricity pricing, consumer-support schemes and wider heat-policy programmes are also inconsistent, making it harder for companies to forecast demand or commit to long-term R&D.
The paper sets out practical actions that would give industry the clarity and confidence it needs. These include finalising key requirements across the heat and smart-energy landscape, strengthening cross-government coordination through the Flexibility Roadmap, and aligning wider programmes such as the Warm Homes Plan and the Heat Strategy. With clearer signals and a coherent pathway, manufacturers can invest, innovate and scale the smart, flexible technologies essential for Clean Power 2030.
