BEAMA launches New Connected Homes Group

17 Dec 2014

BEAMA is globally recognised for its representation of the UK industry for intelligent smart metering and has been the primary trade body in developing the specification for the smart meter rollout. Building on this success BEAMA has launched its UK Connected Homes Group, to develop interoperable systems for connected homes. More than 20 manufacturers and data service providers active in the UK market have already joined and will be working on skills and training for the sector, industry technical standards, and UK market guidance on the compatibility of third party smart energy systems. The Group will also work closely with DECC and metering manufacturers to maintain links to the smart meter rollout.

BEAMA CEO,  Dr Howard Porter said:
"This is a rapidly growing sector and we are already seeing advances in the customer proposition for connected homes, for example in the heating control market.  As well as helping homeowners save energy and manage their homes more efficiently, it also gives UK businesses opportunities for inward investment and export. As the only organisation with members across the whole supply chain, our Connected Homes Group will play a key part in the development of this market"

"Consumer benefits are a key element of the smart metering programme and the level of market demand for consumer engagement solutions is greater in the UK than anywhere else in the world. We expect the roll out to drive significant innovations in consumer energy management systems."

At the launch members heard presentations from DECC, Ofgem and other BEAMA members,  demonstrating how the UK is currently the market leader in this sector,  and how BEAMA will provide the primary focus for engagement as it already represents the full breadth of the supply chain,  from manufacturers of low carbon technologies such as heat pumps,  hot water storage systems,  EV chargers,  companies providing data services and  communication systems for connected homes smart energy platforms,  and Smart Grid technologies.

The scope of the BEAMA Connected Homes Group extends across all key services in the home and the links to Smart Meter communications systems, grid supply and distributed generation.
