Protocols used in the Medium
This refers to the code which describes the specific digital signalling technique precisely in all of its aspects, including defining the address structures, instruction codes and control parameters of all of the sensors, appliances and accessories on the system.
Many have been developed, some proprietary and some freely available. The user does not have to worry about this aspect of the system, it is determined to some extent by the choice of equipment and to some extent by the control medium to be used.
In recent years manufacturers have been working together with the standardisation bodies to share and simplify their protocols and much progress has been made so that today there is a good degree of interoperability. Where different protocols meet, for example if it is necessary to bridge form a Powerline application to a low power radio one, standard interfaces are now available and suitably qualified Smart Housing contractors will have no difficulty in achieving a smooth transition and perfect interoperability.
