A Guide for Householders
If your home central heating is provided by a gas or oil boiler plus radiators (by far the most common system in UK homes) you should ensure that your controls meet the minimum standard described below and that you are using those controls effectively.
There is actually no ‘minimum standard’ for controls in existing homes so we’ve used the same specification as is required for a new heating system under the current building regulations. These have been carefully specified to ensure that the biggest potential areas for energy wastage in a heating system are under control.
There is no need to wait until your boiler needs replacing before you bring your controls up to the minimum standard. Any improvements to controls should save you money and energy straight away, and this can be up to 17% of your current heating bills (so more money is saved in real terms if you have an older, less efficient boiler.) Many controls are available as ‘wireless’ versions and can be easily installed in retrofit situations without the need to run wires through your home.
