With such systems a mechanical supply ventilation unit continuously delivers filtered air centrally to a dwelling. In individual rooms additional ventilation measures in the form of purge ventilators (e.g. openable windows) or extract fans or passive stack vents form part of the system for additional ventilation when required. Background vents are also included as part of a PIV system when required to prevent over pressurisation within the dwelling.
PIV systems can provide an energy efficiency benefit through pre-heating of the supply air by drawing it through the roof space, the roof tiles, sunspaces or solar air heaters. The incorporation of low watt motor technology within such systems can result in very significant carbon emission reductions and running cost savings.
