A ground source heat pump system comprises of a ground heat exchanger, water to water or water to air heat pump and an in-building heat distrubution system. The majority if ground source heat pumps installed in the UK are now closed loop i.e. the ground heat exchanger is a sealed length of pipe containing a circulating fluid. The pipe is installed either horizontally or vertically in the ground.
A ground source heat pump tends to be more efficient than the air source type owing to consistency of source temperature and the absence of any de-frosting requirement for the heat pump.
